Red glow.

Hello to you! Your highly anticipated first ever tutorial is finally here! In this tutorial, I'll be teaching you on how to add the lovely red glow to icons, and at the same time improving the quality of images. Click the following images for a clearer view.

I'll be teaching you how to turn this boring, dull icon of Kate Hudson:

Into this lovely icon of a beautiful Kate Hudson with a red glow:

First of all, I will start with this boring image of Kate Hudson.

Duplicate a new layer from the existing background layer by clicking on the background layer and dragging it to the icon below which say "create a new layer". The icon is one of a square with the bottom left hand corner folded upwards. You will get this.

Under the blending options, click and select "soft light". Duplicate two more layers and set all to "soft light" You should get three layers of the duplicate in total, with the blending option set to "soft light" for all. Now you should see that the image has become this:

Doesn't look appealing at all, does it? So from here, you duplicate two more layers of the original image and set the blending option to "screen" for both. The two screened layers should be above the three layers which are set to "soft light". Now you will get something like this:

Looks a lot better now, right? The whole image looks a lot livelier and brighter than the original image which was so dull-looking.

Now that we're done with brightening up the image, we're going to what the tutorial is mainly about: Adding the awesome red glow to your image.

The next step that you need to do is to create a brand new layer on top of all the five duplicated layers, and set the blending option to "screen". It would not make a difference on the image itself because the layer is a blank.

Go to the toolbar and click on the brush tool. Using the default brushes, click on the brush that is sized 100.

Now choose colour you like. Because the image looks better with a red glow, I used red for this. Using the brush, find a spot that you like and click on it with the brush! But remember: you have to do that on the new blank layer.

I chose these two spots:

One thing you must remember is that you should never try to use the glows, whatever colour it is, on spots that are dark, i.e black. It will turn out like this:

Isn't ugly with the red spot down there? Glows work best with light spots, not dark ones.

Okay, now you're done with the image! Pointing at any layer, right click and click on "flatten image". All the layers would be automatically flattened to the main image, and you would be left with only one layer of the edited image.

Now, create a new document with the size of an icon, at 100x100. Drag the image over to the new document and resize it until it looks best. The end product would look something like mine, depending on how you resize it.

And tada! You'll have your own awesome-looking icon with lovely red glow like mine!
